Values alignment
Values are deeply held beliefs about what is desirable or important. They represent the underlying meanings against which aspects of life and behaviour can be measured. They vary according to individuals and organisations.
Individual values in relation to work and the workplace will impact on how satisfaction in employment is experienced. Work to assist individuals to identify their values can provide a tool for coaching and career management to ensure that sources of disconnection are minimised. This results in increased motivation, satisfaction and enhanced morale.
This process of exploration may reveal that the words which were thought to be common in the articulation of values are ascribed different meanings by different individuals. Similar understandings of the meaning of words cannot be assumed.
Organisational values have often been articulated in a values statement. An analysis of how these values are being implemented within organisations and reflected in the day to day practices and behaviours is the first step in achieving the building blocks of organisational conflict resolution. This will enhance the performance of teams, create a sense of unity and shared culture and increase individual commitment to organisational goals. It will also provide managers with clarity in how to motivate and provide leadership.
